Addon: Wolf Expansion

Wolves now come in 6 sizes, divided into 3 classes (Playful, Helpful, Protective). The smallest two are the Playful variants, followed by two mid-sized Helpful variants, and the two biggest are the Protective variants. Each class has a distinguishing collar: the Playful wolves wear the original collar, the Helpful wolves sport a bandana around the neck, and the Protective wolves have a bulky spiked collar. Each class of wolves will have unique abilities, and will enhance your experience through ways suggested by their class name.

Size Variant Overview

Playful: Wears basic collar.

  • Size 1 (model scale 1.0) - vanilla wolf size
  • Size 2 (model scale 1.2)

Helpful: Wears bandana.

  • Size 3 (model scale 1.4)
  • Size 4 (model scale 1.6)

Protective: Wears spike collar.

  • Size 5 (model scale 1.8)
  • Size 6 (model scale 2.0) - Alpha Wolf

Breeding

Breed any two wolves together to produce an offspring that’s the averaged size of its parents! For example, a wolf of scale 1.0 and 1.4 will give birth to a wolf of size 1.2 (1.0 1.4 = 2.4 / 2 = 1.2). Likewise, two wolves of identical size will give birth to a same sized baby (ex. 1.6 1.6 = 3.2 / 2 = 1.6).

On rare occasions, the baby wolf will be 1 size bigger than the expected average, or 1 size smaller. Two wolves of size 1.2 may give birth to a size 1.4 wolf (1.2 1.2 = 2.4 / 2 = 1.2 -> random chance to increase 1 size -> 1.4). Use this method to breed larger wolves, until at last you attain the massive Alpha Wolf!

However if breeding isn’t your style, you can still encounter and tame all of the variants in the wild, including the Alpha Wolf! Chances of those encounters aren’t very high though, so stock up on patience before you set out on your search.

Distinct Characteristics & Unique Qualities

Playful

Small and friendly, these little guys are here to play with you and help you relax.

  • Playful wolves just want to play, which lets them focus on learning more tricks and commands.

The Playful wolf can currently perform an additional 3 commands (down, roll left, roll right). More to come in the future!

Protective (Alpha)

The Alpha Wolf has many distinct features that will leave you with little doubt about its identity.

  • Most notably, when an Alpha Wolf spawns (or is birthed), it will give off a unique howl heard through the area. You will know one is in the area if you hear it while exploring, so listen closely!
  • Alpha Wolves don’t de-spawn, and will remain in their area until killed, so don’t worry if you cannot locate it immediately.
  • A tamed Alpha Wolf can be ridden like a mount! Its ground speed is significant, even at a trot.
    • You can further boost it with a bone for lightning fast travel. Custom wolf sprinting animations included!
  • Alphas can also jump!
  • An alpha won’t let anyone ride it that isn’t its owner. It will shake off the intruder and growl at them!
  • Alpha wolves don't like competition! A wild alpha will attack another alpha on sight, so be careful leaving your alpha where another can spawn.

Giving Wolves Commands

You can now communicate with your wolf through commands! The original vanilla ‘sit’ command has been improved and added to, resulting in 6 total commands: stand, sit, down, roll left, roll right, come. Additionally, commands can now be given through gestures or verbally. Verbal commands can be given to all your pet wolves, or to specific wolves by using their name.

  • Stand
    • Gesture: interact with the wolf
    • Verbal: ‘!stand’ or ‘![wolf name] stand’ (ex. ‘!wolfie stand’)

  • Sit
    • Gesture: interact with standing wolf (crouch interact for Alpha)
    • Verbal: ‘!sit’ or ‘![wolf name] sit’
  • Down (Playful only)
    • Gesture: crouch interact
    • Verbal: ‘!down’ or ‘![wolf name] down’

  • Roll Left (Playful only)
    • Gesture: crouch interact, then look left
    • Verbal: ‘!roll left’ or ‘![wolf name] roll left’

  • Roll Right (Playful only)
    • Gesture: crouch interact, then look right
    • Verbal: ‘!roll right’ or ‘![wolf name] roll right’

  • Come
    • Gesture: Get the wolf’s attention by looking at it (it will turn towards you and begin wagging its tail), crouch 3 times really quickly
    • Verbal: ‘!come’ or ‘![wolf name] come’

Howling

During nighttime, between 11PM and 1AM, an alpha wolf may initiate howling sessions. Howling alphas trigger all other wolves within 50 blocks to join the howl. In order to be able to start howling, a tamed alpha must be sitting, and a wild alpha needs to be not angry. Non-alpha wolves can respond only under the same conditions; tamed and sitting, or wild and not angry. And lastly, each wolf size has a different pitch to their howling, with alphas being the lowest (deepest sounding) while the smallest ones have the highest pitch.

The moon intensity determines how much howling happens per night:

  • New moon or 1/4 moon -> No howling tonight.
  • Half moon -> Alpha does 1 howling session of 1-3 howls. The other non-alpha wolves have a 75% chance to respond.
  • 3/4 moon -> Alpha does 2 howling sessions of 1-3 howls each. The other non-alpha wolves have a 75% chance to respond.
  • Full moon -> Alpha does 3 howling sessions of 1-3 howls each. The other non-alpha wolves have a 75% chance to respond.

Misc Features

  • Wolf sizes apply to all vanilla wolf variants.
  • The bandanas and spiked collars are dyeable, just like the original collar.
  • You can un-tame any wolf by feeding it dirt (WIP).
  • Tamed wolves show who their owner is in their name tags. Naming a wolf that already has an owner tag will prepend the wolf's name to the owner.
  • Bigger wolves have slightly faster movement speeds (0.3 at size 1, to 0.35 at size 6).
  • Your wolf will sense when you are looking at it, and will start wagging its tail and turn to look at you (doesn’t work when you’re in creative mode, as the wolf can’t detect you).
  • If you give a wolf a command it can’t perform, such as telling an Alpha to lay down, it will tilt its head and make a confused sound.
